Malls in Baghdad

Al Adel Shopping Centre - BaghdadYou might have read about the Al Adel Shopping Centre in Baghdad, as the scene for some of the bloodiest gun fights during the recently ended US invasion of Iraq.

Once a popular hangout for Baghdad teenagers and courting couples. Now the  shops are shut but full of goods abandoned when the owners were forced to quit by the encroaching violence.

However proposals for two new supermalls have been announced by The Mayoralty of Baghdad.  The mayoralty of Baghdad has signed a deal with the Dar al-Sabahcompany to build a mall in the al-Harithiya district at a cost of $42 million [50 billion Iraqi dinars],” according to an official statement received by the Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The project is to be completed within 3 years.

“The MoB signed another deal with the Amwag company to build the al-Nakhil mall in the area of Palestine Street at a cost of $12 million [15 billion Iraqi dinars],” it added.

The malls will include stores, centers, restaurants and entertainment areas.

It’s hoped these malls will create a new commercial buzz in the city – creating a shopping destination that will feature designer and high street names from the west, as well a multi-screen cinemas and social spaces.
